GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 657191
switching between docks, work area and responsiveness to actions using wacom
Last modified: 2011-08-24 04:32:44 UTC
Hi, I've noticed the problem in earlier versions of Gimp too, but now single window mode is actually there, I think it really should be mentioned that there must be a problem with how gimp handles setting focus to user entry actions when switching from work area to toolbox, layers, all docks actually, including pop ups like for saving exporting, buttons that ask for confirmation when performing any operation or effect. Sometimes, not always, but very often, when I want to select a different tool, or do one of the actions described above, gimp simply does not react. Nothing happens. For example, I want to use the paint bucket, I move my wacom pen to the paint bucket icon, and click (tap on the tablet with my pen) but it does not get activated. I then have to click somewhere else on the screen, in the working area, my drawing or on the border of the window, and then back on the tool. Sometimes I have to do this several times before getting the tool activated. The same happens with buttons in all pop-up menu's for the effects, tools, save and export dialogues. Sometimes I can't even enter a filename when I want to 'save as'. The dialogue gets focus, but none of the entry fields or buttons. I first thought the problem was related to moving between separate windows of the same program, but now, in single window mode, the problem still is there. I was so glad, thinking I'd be freed of that bug, but apparently, I'm not, even in in single window mode. It happened in Ubuntu 9.10, 10.04, now on mint 11, running gnome (2), not using unity. I didn't report it earlier because I first thought it wouldn't be related to gimp (thought it could be wacom-driver related, since I think it only happens using my wacom. I don't quite use gimp without it) but now the wacom driver seems to work so differently (at least according to the way I have to configure it, compared to a couple of years ago) and the problem is so persistent (and no other app, like mypaint, inkscape etc.. has this problem) it really must be a bug in gimp in my opinion. I sincerely hope this will get fixed soon. If I can help with more info, feel free to contact me, and please, with how to get the required info, certainly if it's it's technical, for example debug related. Greets, Bart
I've been seeing a similar issue - I've mainly seen it on the file save dialog, where I will be unable to enter any text, or use any of the buttons. It's frustrating since I cannot reproduce it reliably. The workaround is reliable though - press 'Esc' and then 'Save As' again. Wacom Intuos 3, Ubuntu 10.10. Probably a dupe of Bug 635644.

Indeed, I cannot reproduce it reliably either, sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't, if I have to estimate, about one third of the times I need to do an action outside of the working area (drawing), the problem occurs.
Hi Bart, thank you for your bug report. In order to fix this, we need some way to reproduce the problem. If any of you find a way, please write that in Bug 635644. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 635644 ***
