Description ahatomastarday 2011-07-21 08:15:18 UTC
[Not sure if this is Mutter-related or GNOME Shell-related thing. Please move it if I've posted it to the wrong place. Thank you!]

I've discovered some really useful keyboard shortcuts recently in Windows 7 (maybe they're also available on Vista, I don't know) and I think it'd make sense to implemented them in GNOME 3, since both desktops share this drag-windows-to-specific-areas-to-resize feature (the behavior I'm referring to is demonstrated in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ip9Bgjaspjs).

These shortcuts are the following:

Windows key + Up = Maximize window
Windows key + Down = Minimize window (maybe this one wouldn't make much sense in GNOME 3, since minimize buttons are gone)
Windows key + Left = Move window to the left and resize it so it fits half the screen
Windows key + Right = Move window to the right and resize it so it fits half the screen

Sure these shortcuts aren't obvious and the average user probably won't use them, but I think power users will find them pretty convenient (at least I do). I also believe the design team plans to release a brief, brochure-like user guide for new GNOME 3 users, including some basics shortcuts. Maybe these ones could be included there to increase its discoverability (in fact, I discovered them by accident in Windows 7).

Mutter is fine. However, we already have an open bug report requesting this feature, so I'll close this one. Feel free to report any other issues you encounter.
