Description Allison Karlitskaya (desrt) 2011-07-20 19:24:01 UTC
In the interests of "normal humans" I just modified GLib to strongly suggest a units policy based on SI. In particularly, I added this string to the developer documentation:

IEC units should only be used for reporting things with a strong "power of 2" basis, like RAM sizes or RAID stripe sizes. Network and storage sizes should be reported in the normal SI units.

Language along these lines should definitely be present in the HIG.

I think it would make sense to add this as a larger section on units and formats, probably to the writing style page.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-devel-docs/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
