When opening a folder, nautilus makes the filename column wide enough to contain the longest filenames. This is not convenient when we want to view details: we have to scroll all the way to the right and resize the column manually.

Nautilus could either moderate automatically the filename column's width, or even better, provide an option: "prevent column widths that would require horizontal scrolling"
