GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 650690
gnome-shell hangs / uses 99% CPU if you have a large SVG in your homedir
Last modified: 2013-03-27 01:12:58 UTC
I copied an SVG from a backup drive into my Documents directory, but I never actually opened it or used it, and completely forgot about it. My system started hanging temporarily a lot. I would go over to a tty and run top and see that gnome-shell was taking up 99%+ CPU. If I killed gnome-shell, I was able to continue my work, but it would usually happen again within a few hours. With some help I was able to trace it to gnome-shell doing a file open on this one particular SVG file, over and over again - maybe 7 times at the same time. Turns out, the SVG had the word 'sky' in it, and when I went to the applications overview, I mistyped sparkleshare as "sk..." and the overview started to thumbnail the 50MB svg over and over again for the recent documents area. I think I should be able to have large SVGs in my homedir. Maybe gnome-shell, if it can't thumbnail the file in a reasonable amount of time, should just bail and put up a generic image icon for the thumbnail? If you want a copy of the SVG I'm happy to provide it.
I'm having similar problem... I created some large SVG files, (as well as large Tiff files too), and since then, Gnome-Shell is losing my "favorite icons" and some Application icons randomly... When that happens and I "type to search", Gnome-Shell freezes! My files are inside my "Documents" folder...
Hi folks, does this still happen with 3.6?
I'm still on 3.4 (Fedora 17) but if someone has 3.6 this should be easy to try to reproduce.
Hmm, but you can reproduce in F17? Recent items were already removed in 3.4, so if this is still an issue, it's probably related to the gnome-documents search provider (and unlikely to be fixed in 3.6).
I can't seem to reproduce it in F17. Should I be concerned though that no SVGs at all pop up under the Documents results in the shell search?
Gah - gnome-documents probably does not consider SVGs documents, sorry I didn't think of that. In 3.6 it should show up as result from nautilus, but that obviously requires F18 to test :-(
Let's assume this one to be OBSOLETE by now. Please reopen if this is not the case.
