Attached is a sample .gnumeric file that weighs 8 kilobytes.

When asking gnumeric to save it in the "MS Excel 97/2000/XP" format, the resulting file weighs 1.4 megabytes.

Opening that resulting file with LibreOffice Calc and saving it again reduces the .xls filesize to 26 kilobytes.

We somehow produce 65536 BIFF_ROW_v2 records.
