Description David Price 2011-04-18 20:35:54 UTC
I'm working on a Ubuntu Maverick machine. I have Sun's Java, version 1.6.0_24 installed, and I have installed JAW version 0.30.4, which I downloaded from the gnome ftp site. Orca is version 2.32.0 running under gnome version 2.32.0.

I am trying to use the GATE text processing software, version 6.0 (http://gate.ac.uk). It is free software and can be downloaded from that site. When I start the GATE Developer interface and then try to open a "language resource", Java hangs. I have had a sighted person look at the screen and no controls work (Tab, clicking on OK, clicking on Cancel, etc.). Alt-Tab will not move between applications. The only way to return functionality to the gnome desktop is to kill the Java process.

As an aside, I've run other Swing applications on this machine and have had no trouble opening dialogs, child windows, etc.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Install GATE and ensure an icon is placed on the desktop.
2. Launch GATE from desktop by clicking on icon.
3. From the tree on the left side, right click on the Language Resources" item.
4. Select "new" from the application menu.
5. Select either available option in the menu ((GATE corpus or GATE document).
6. A dialog will appear and things appear to hang in gnome, as described above).

I've tried opening other dialog boxes with the same result.

This seems to be a problem caused by X conflict.
Patches for JAW, at-spi and Orbit-2 are needed to solve this bug.

I'll attach these patches later.

I couldn't reproduce this issue on Ubuntu with JDK 1.6.0_25 following your steps. Could you retry it again?

[Resetting QA Contact to newly introduced "at-spi-maint@gnome.bugs".
Reason: So far it was impossible to watch changes in at-spi bug reports without following all the specific persons (Li Yuan, Bill Haneman, Jeff Wai, ...) and also their activity outside of at-spi reports.

IMPORTANT: Anyone interested in following all bug activity (including all maintainers) must watch the "at-spi-maint@gnome.bugs" dummy user by adding it to the 'Users to watch' list under Preferences->Email preferences. This is also the default procedure nowadays in GNOME when setting up new products.]

[Mass-resetting default assignee, see bug 705890. Please reclaim this bug report by setting the assignee to yourself if you still plan to work on this. Thanks!]

Closing this because it refers to a really old version.

Feel free to open a new bug if the problem is still a problem.

[Moving at-spi/java-atk-wrapper bugs to separate product. See bug 740075]
