Description Hannes Ovrén 2011-01-20 16:01:19 UTC
I just built Gnome-shell using jhbuild and managed to get it going.
Unfortunately it crashes on me under certain, repeatable conditions.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Before starting the shell have four applications open (Google Chrome, Spotify, Thunderbird and gnome-terminal).
2. Start gnome shell (./gnome-shell --replace)
3. Open the overlay (clicking Activities, hot corner or Meta-key)
4. Hover over any of the open applications windows.

Expected result: Not sure, long since I tried the shell :)

Actual result: Crash back to metacity with the following log messages:

----- BEGIN console output -----------------

Btw, I am running Ubuntu 10.10.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.
Without a stack trace from the crash it's very hard to determine what caused it.
Can you get us a stack trace? Please see http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces for more information on how to do so. Thanks in advance!

and please read this link https://webstats.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Debugging

Stack trace of crash

Here is a stack trace when I performed the following steps:

1. Open overview
2. Hover over the applications list on the left hand side. This was to make sure the shell was working, which I suppose it was since application icons were highlighted on hover.
3. Hover over one of the windows of the open applications in the overview. This made the shell crash (mouse still worked, but hovering over application icons as in step 2 did not produce the highlight effect).
Comment 4 Hannes Ovrén 2011-01-26 08:00:42 UTC
Actually, I think my bug could be a duplicate of #636298.
Comment 5 Brett Witherspoon 2011-02-06 19:57:14 UTC
I had this same problem with the classic radeon mesa ( r600c ) drivers. After switching to the new Gallium drivers the shell works as expected ( r600g ).

This most likely a duplicate of https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=636298.
