It's easy enough to go to Last.fm and mark tracks as being "loved" but it would be great if this could be done from Banshee. 

The best example I can give is the feature currently implemented in Rhythmbox, where a user simply clicks a star icon in the last.fm menu.

This is a great idea.  So great, in fact, that it's already been reported. :)  It looks like there was a patch for this at one point, but it's a couple years old, so someone will need to update it and make modifications as necessary until it's ready for inclusion.
