This is a similar bug to previous versions of empathy, only in Empathy verison 2.32.0.1.

Basic commands like /msg and /join do not work under the IRC protocol in Empathy verison 2.32.0.1

/query and /msg are broken, that's bug #623682. But /join and /j should work (I just tested). Be sure to prefix the channel name with #.

Your right, /query and /msg are broken.  /join and /j do work.  This bug should rolled up into #623682
