Last modified: 2018-02-08 12:57:16 UTC
Dear Developers, A blind user ask me a question what possible doing Orca if he would like using automatic updated webpages? He look Orca application preferences/Firefox page, but he unable found a solution. The problem is following: He using a webpage with refreshing every 20 second, or presenting various contents with a frame. When this operation is happening, Orca always begin reread the webpage or dinamical changed information. We try turn off "Automatically start speaking a page when it is first _loaded" setting, but not help, the cursor always jump another place when dinamical changed information is presented. We try turning live region settings with backspace keys, but nothing happened, nothing changed. The example webpage is following: http://zolujf.info I no this problem fix is possible difficult, because Orca does'nt using virtual cursor. Attila
Another webpage with producing this issue when I read articles or news: http://dumaalmas.hu For example this webpage what structure use? Prewious months this webpage does'nt producing this issue, but possible web designers changing anything, unfortunately now for example this webpage unusable with Orca because Orca always spokening comments. :-):-) How can you verify this? Simple open this wroted webpage, and open a link. After this, begin scrolling some lines, and after you do this, not need do anything, only need wait. :-):-)
Created attachment 172248 [details] Debug file to show what happening when I simple opening a link with dumaalmas.hu webpage I simple opened the http://dumaalmas.hu webpage, and opening a link. After this, I nothing do, Orca read always automaticaly the little part of comments. Malory in Orca list suggested I try disable the Java Script running under Firefox preferences/content page. This is solving dumaalmas.hu related problem, but this is not a very good method, because have another webpages with need the JS running. For example, if the Java Scripts is disabled, I unable to using a webpage with a combo box to choosing any element. Note, impossible to define only except pages in Firefox with disabling JS script running. Anybody possible try looking Orca why do this wrong method, why says always this short comments part? Malory wroted following in Orca list: "I could not reach the first site, but dumaalmas has in-page scripts refreshing comments (but not a whole-page refresh so why is Orca having trouble?) and there's a calendar xmlhttprequest script in the head of the page... I don't see anything on the main page that actually asks for an entire page refresh, looks like all ajax. Is the problem gone if you turn off Javascript? That can at least pin down which thing is causing trouble. I see no meta-refresh tags and Firefox is not telling me of a server-side refresh setting. Also maybe with Javascript off you'll be able to debug more? cheers, Mallory" The http://zolujf.info webpage help Trev suggested accessibility.blockautorefresh preference setting with true value. Unfortunately the two I wroted problem I think is different. Attila
Hi Attila, I dont think there is much that orca can do. The real problem is bad website authoring. Maybe attempt to contact the website owner and ask them not to use page refresh, instead they should look at ARIA live regions which will allow the website to update, but the screenreader user can change what they want to hear with the live region announcement level. in the meantime, disable javascript and disable automatic page refresh in firefox, unfortunately I dont think it can be done on a page by page case, but only globally.
