GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 628593
Default account setting not observed on reply
Last modified: 2019-11-12 19:10:18 UTC
I have 3 accounts set up in Evolution, in that order: * Account 1 * Account 2 * Account 3 (default) When replying a message, I would expect the default account (Account 3) to be selected for me automatically as sender. However, what happens is that Account 1 is selected instead, so I have to change the sender manually every single time I send an e-mail. The default sender seems to be selected by the order the accounts were set up instead of by the default setting. That would be fine if at least there'd be a workaround to reorder the list of accounts, but there isn't. Thanks.
When replying your default address is normally the one that you received the email to, which makes sense IMO.
Yes, but in my case it isn't. Evolution seems to always pick up "Account 1" regardless. It might have to do with my settings, which I should have probably better specified on the original message: * Account 1 (my@email.com, nntp account) * Account 2 (my@otheremail.com, imap account, alias to Account 3 with the same server settings) * Account 3 (my@email.com, imap account, default) So I would think Evolution looks only at the e-mail address and matches it to the first account it finds, regardless of the default setting
The heuristics we use to pick the initial account on replies is already pretty complex and is based on endless mailing list discussions and complaints about the policy. This was refined even further in 2.30, but you haven't said what version of Evolution you're using. Also, what type of folder are you replying from: the actual IMAP folder or a search folder that includes the message from your IMAP folder? Evolution has a harder time determining the proper account from a search folder, which can include results from multiple accounts.
Thanks Matthew for your reply. To answer your questions: * I'm using Evolution 2.30.2 - I've updated the bug info as well * The behaviour I'm describing relates to when I'm replying a message from an IMAP folder. However, when replying to a message in a search folder the behaviour is exactly the same (i.e. my nntp account address is picked up as sender instead of the default one).
I know this is very old bug report and asking for further testing is probably out of question after such long time, thus I'm sorry about that, but there had been done more improvements in this area, especially the Send Account Override, which is part of 3.20.x+, thus a retesting with 3.20.x and later (the current stable version is 3.24.5, with to be released soon 3.26.0) might make sense. For example, it pick the From account based on the folder the message is viewed in, thus if you have configured an IMAP account and the message had been received in that accounts' folder, then if the account has also configured the sending part, then it is used instead of the default account. The Send Account Override can, well, override this behaviour based on the folder or recipient.
