GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 626327
eMail Account Passwords Disappear
Last modified: 2010-09-10 08:44:52 UTC
Create an eMail account with an ISP. It works. In a few hours or maybe a few days the password for the account must be entered again. Forgot to copy the message on the screen. will do and attach to this report if I can determine how to do that.
Created attachment 167379 [details] ScreenShot of the "offending" message about lost password As I mentioned when I originally submitted this annoyance, the password for an account dissappears and MUST be re-entered. This issue happens for all three accounts that are being used. One time/day one of the accounts will become burdened with the necessity to re-enter the password. If the account were busy, one could surmise that after a while, a successful interrogation of the eMail account might occur. This is not true. Once this error message is enabled, the only solution is to re-enter the password (of course, after finding the password). Hope this gives whomever enough information to smite this issue! Thanks
Created attachment 167383 [details] This is the other type of message that indicates "lost" passwords My recollection is that this the last of the messages that confirm, to me, that Evolution misplaces eMail account passwords thus preventing a seamless retrieval of eMail (and this is just from one ISP). thanks for your efforts ...
(In reply to comment #1) > Created an attachment (id=167379) [details] > ScreenShot of the "offending" message about lost password It says "Unable to connect to server". Hence that one is not an Evolution issue.
Andre, I believe you miss the point of the screen shots. They are the only clue I had to offer to show that there is something amiss with Evolution. Other access, from other computers through other ISP can access these accounts and do not misplace the password. Once the password has been misplaced by Evolution I got these weird error messages. Please note, in any event, the password does not have to be replaced on the server for eMail access. Again, please note, the password must be reEntered into Evolution so that it is there for the password access requirement on the server. Or said another way, No Password, No Access. Is this a better explanation. I wish I could be a little more clear. I just started Evolution because the software protecting a windows box that normally collects all of our mail has a vendor that ramdomly deActivates a critical license so until that is resolved, the linux box and Evolution were put to use. It seems to be a nice package except when the password is lost. When the password is no longer in Evolution, I have to pay attention and get Evolution to retain the password for each of the eMail accounts I have given to Evolution for it to retrieve. The term lost may be incorrect. Maybe I should have used misplaced; or, maybe reset? Whatever the reason, the account in Evolution is void of the necessary password when the messages I screen printed begin to appear.
(In reply to comment #4) > Andre, I believe you miss the point of the screen shots. No, as I only commented on ONE of them. > Once the password has been misplaced by > Evolution I got these weird error messages. That's a known issue with Evolution I think.
Not to be a "Nay Sayer" about Evolution it is just that I would think that an eMail package should be quite good at collecting eMail without requiring constant attention. As the package stands, after attempting to get it to work for me I find the necessity and requirement of "constant" feeding of account passwords is a little bit much. It is like the "mailer" part of Evolution has unrecoverable "senior" moments and the detail must be supplied over and over. I guess I am just not cut out to be an Evolution "care giver." Other than this particular headache, the package is very nice. It is most unfortunate that this is, from my view, the Achilles tendon. I am going to have to "bag" my use of Evolution as a production tool until it gets over this ailment! For an interim tool it worked well enough for us to survive in a critical moment. Maybe the eMail will be ready for "prime time" soon and we can return. Thank you for all the effort put into the code. Good luck!
Evolution used to "forget" passwords on most errors when trying to connect to a server, forcing users to reenter their passwords. This was fixed in bug #337479, thus I'm marking this as a duplicate of it. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 337479 ***
