Spell check fails with the abbreviation "etc."

Trying to spell check the word "etc" gives you the option to change it to "etc.", which is correct, however, once you change it to "etc." it then underlines the "etc" part and offers it to change it again, leaving you with "etc..". Essentially the spell checker is not recognising that the word boundary is part of the word in this case.
Sorry for the lack of replies. This is basically a very old bug which is hard to fix because we rely on pango to figure out the boundaries of the words to spell check and it has a hard time knowing that "." is an abbreviation and not the end of the sentence *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 131576 ***
