Description Yann 2010-06-09 01:17:47 UTC
Currently on Ekiga 3.2.6:
- when I "Add contact" (Ctrl-N) it appears in the main window (Local roster), but not in the Adress Book,
- and when I add a contact in the "Adress Book" (Ctrl-B), they don't appear in the main window (Local roster).

This is quite confusing. Bug or feature ?

How do you add a contact in AddressBook?
Comment 2 Yann 2010-08-10 20:40:19 UTC
in the Adress Book window : menu Action ->New contact
Comment 3 Eugen Dedu 2010-08-11 08:05:06 UTC
In Action menu of AddressBook window I have Add to Local Roster, not NewContact. And it is really added to Local Roster when I use it.

I use 3.2.7, but nothing changed between 3.2.6 and 3.2.7 in this respect. Are you sure? Could you send a screenshot?
Comment 4 Snark 2010-08-11 08:48:22 UTC
On the one hand you're adding a contact in the addressbook window, so it goes in the addressbook ; on the other hand you're adding a contact in the main window, so it goes in the roster in the main window.

I don't find it that confusing.

@Eugen : Here are 2 screenshots , with Ekiga 3.2.6 , in Ubuntu 10.04 : you can see it is written "New contact" in the "Action" menu.

@Snark : indeed what I feel confusing is the fact that a contact in the AdressBook
is not seen in the main window (what is called "Local Roster"). Maybe it can be useful in some situations (company with numerous internal contacts ???), but for the average user i think it is confusing, and i think we should make it clearer that there are 2 ways of adding a contact. For example when adding a contact in the AdressBook for the 1st time, Ekiga could warn the user that the contacts in the AdressBook are not visible in the Local Roster.

You forgot to attach the screenshots.

In local roster there are contacts usable by ekiga only.

Addressbook is connected to evolution, which is global to desktop. So all the contacts there are visible for all application in gnome desktop.

So there is a local roster, and a global addressbook.

This should be made more clear in ekiga GUI. This missinterpretation is exacerbated by the fact that Addressbook window presents Call history (ekiga-only), ekiga.net directory (ekiga-only) and Personal (desktop-wide).

Some separation needs to be done in addressbook GUI...

Julien, Damien, any idea? I would remove Call history from Addressbook for ex.

Ekiga is not under active development anymore:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/Infrastructure/Infrastructure/-/issues/273

Ekiga saw its last release 7 years ago. The last code commits were 4 years ago.

Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping to reflect reality. Please feel free to reopen this ticket (and transfer the project to GNOME Gitlab, as GNOME Bugzilla is deprecated) if anyone takes the responsibility for active Ekiga development again in the future.
