when i look at some of the text (mainly in the transparent black borders) the text is massive and usualy impossible to read as it goes off the screen.
eg in activitys when i hover over a window the name is massive and i usualy only see the first few letters.

Check 'xxdpyinfo | grep resolution', your server is probably reporting something really weird. Bug 599713 will make the shell follow the "sanitized" resolution that the rest of GNOME is using, so will hide the problem.
