Need localization for some chess notation signs
Last modified: 2018-05-22 12:20:09 UTC
Hi, would it be possible to make some of the chess notation signs locale dependent? The problem is that the Russian version of the algebraic notation (both long and short) is different from the English equivalent at some aspects, and so it is insufficient just to write the abbreviated piece names in Russian. In particular: -- capture is denoted by a semicolon (i. e. 'Кf3:d4' or 'К:d4' instead of 'Nf3xd4' or 'Nxd4'); -- a multiplication sign or an 'x' is used for checkmate instead of a '#'; -- there is no equals sign to indicate the pawn promotion (i. e. 'd8Ф' rather than 'd8=Q'). One more specific feature is that neither the rank nor a semicolon or 'x' are usually written then a capture by a pawn is described in the short notation (i. e. just 'ed' rather than 'exd5'). Note that some Russian chess players now seem to prefer the English notation (as it is used in PGN files), but if piece names are localized, then other rules of the Russian notation should also be confomed).
