Description Arky 2010-03-12 08:29:09 UTC
Blind ubuntu users find it easier to search files as you type the character instead of searchbox interface.

Testcase:
1) Open nautilus home directory
2) Type 'D' and the Desktop folder is highlighted and search box appears.

This search box based search is not really accessible as it doesn't give the user any feedback if the files are found or not.

Instead the alternative workflow might be like this.

Testcase:
1) Open nautilus home directory
2) Type 'D' and the Desktop folder is highlighted. (no searchbox opens)
3) Type 'Do' and Downloads folder is highlighted and user can press return to enter the directory.

Most other program gnome-panel menu's work just like this.

Thanks for the bug report. Can you provide some more details?

You say that the current functionality 'doesn't give the user any feedback if the files are found or not'. What kind of feedback is required? What kind of feedback would the approach you are suggesting provide?

Also, I do not see how step 3 in your test case differs from the current interface. Pressing return already opens the selected file/folder.

Marking as NEEDINFO.

Hi Allan,

When a blind user is trying to find a file named 'Foobar' with nautilus file browser, they would like to type the first letter of file viz 'F' and the focus should shift to any file(s) starting with the letter. This is common way how blind users find files using a file browser.

The current style of nautilus search is complete unintuitive. If it helps I can record a video and upload it here

So your request is that find as you type should select all matching files/folders?

For example: I have a directory containing foobar.txt and foobaz.txt. Both should be selected if I type 'foo'.
Comment 4 Arky 2010-05-27 16:44:55 UTC
Select the first instance matching the filename, on type the same character select the next matching file.

For example: Type 'f' it matches foobar.txt, type 'f' again it matches 'foobaz.txt'

Gnome-panel application menu is a good example of this behaviour
