See attached screenshot: there's so much empty space, you could fit at least 5 columns of pages instead of 2 on my screen :)

Thanks for the report.  This is actually already filed as bug #590744.  It's not intentional; it doesn't/didn't happen on my SUSE distro, though I've reproduced it on Ubuntu.

Are you sure? Mine was not about having problems selecting items, but rather that the spacing between items in the icon view was huge... but if you're sure, okay :)

Yes, the bug is both about rendering it at twice the width, and also with the interaction with the right side of that double-width rendering not working.  The title of that bug should probably be edited to make it clear there are two apparent symptoms of the one bug.
