GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 608133
Mention libwnck in the platform overview
Last modified: 2014-01-26 13:26:57 UTC
Reading <http://library.gnome.org/devel/platform-overview/stable/window-manager.html.en> I noticed there are no deeper links explaining the technology to developers (API reference, tutorials etc). After having mentioned the fact on the gnome-love ml, Andre Klapper suggested I file a bug to track this issue.
The new platform-overview url is: http://developer.gnome.org/platform-overview/3.2/ (the one listed above is no longer valid). Can someone confirm if this is still a problem at this url, as I am not clear about which of these platforms would be the "window-manager"?
Direct interaction with the window manager is a bit out of vogue currently, for example there are no longer applets nor is there a panel. A good link to the old (pre-GNOME 3) documentation is http://developer.gnome.org/platform-overview/2.32/window-manager.html.en but it is questionable how relevant that advice is to gnome-shell and mutter. It might make sense to mention libwnck in the platform overview.
I do not think that we want to continue to push the window manager metaphor used by libwnck, as in Wayland the concept of the compositor is a bit different.
