No, I can't reproduce, the mouse point is always on same place.
I test over my mouse touchpad on my laptop

This bug is really annoying (almost as much as the "can't use shortcuts like CTRL+C under certain conditions").

Just to make sure you know what I mean, I'll try to describe it again.
Everything is done in browser mode of nautilus 2.28.

In "Compact View" or "Icon View" mode:
======================================

Working:
--------
Extra buttons for navigation. I can back/fwd in folders using extra buttons of my MX700 mouse.

Not working:
------------
Back/fwd action when currently in hover state of an icon.

How to reproduce:
-----------------
Open a nautilus window. Navigate to a (not empty) folder. Move mouse over an icon (make sure it's highlighted). Press navigation button while over an icon. Nothing happens.

In "List View" mode there is no navigation at all, hovered items are selected instead.

I can't reproduce using Nautilus from the Elementary-Nautilus project (based on 2.28.1) in Icon View.

Either the Elementary team made a fix that didn't get pushed back to the main Nautilus branch, or there's something more specific to this problem. Could the model of mouse make a difference? Window manager or GTK engine (a bit of a stretch, but...)
Comment 6 Praveen Thirukonda 2010-02-23 15:51:28 UTC
Nautilus 2.29.91 on lucid standard still has this problem.

> Could the model of mouse make a difference?

No. Tried with three different models by different manufacturers.
Comment 8 David Leidig 2010-05-02 17:30:23 UTC
I also notice this in Ubuntu 10.04, Nautilus 2.30.0

I am using a Microsoft Intellimouse. The back forward buttons (I think button 4 and 5) will not function when hovering over an icon. The mouse back/forward buttons work normally when no file is highlighted.
Comment 9 Pekka Vuorela 2011-05-22 15:53:50 UTC
And still there with Nautilus 3.0.1.1.
Comment 10 André Klapper 2011-08-11 12:52:25 UTC
[Bumping version number as per comment 9]
Comment 11 Kamil Páral 2012-04-17 17:57:02 UTC
I can confirm this problem with nautilus-3.4.0-1.fc17.x86_64, Fedora 17 Beta.

Happens only when the mouse cursor is over an icon and you are using extra hardware buttons on the mouse. In this case forward/back actions do not work. If you move the cursor into an empty space, they start to work. Annoying.

This was fixed for 3.4.1 with this commit [1] as part of bug 660006
