Description Luca Bruno 2009-11-22 15:55:39 UTC
Hello,
currently the greeter has no limit in displaying users. This is horrible bad thinking in a large scale usage of gdm, and especially for privacy.
- Say you are in a university, you could reach managing 1000+ users. That means loading 1000+ users data and displaying them in a scrolled window.
- Say all of these users have an icon with their face, their name, or their user is right the unique id of the university. That's a huge privacy issue.

Proposal:
Consider adding a sort of greeter configuration for limiting the list of users.
Option values:
- If -1, then it's unlimited
- If 0. don't display the list but behave like gdm 2.20, text box with username directly without click
- Limited to the value otherwise.

I'd ask you to not lower this to enhancement please, it's a bad issue for who's using gdm in such a bigger scenario than personal usage.

Limiting the number of users in the face browser to a specific number of users doesn't seem like the best way to "control" how the face browser works.

Note bug #557553, which was recently fixed. This fix added back the "Include", "Exclude", and "IncludeAll" configuration options, which I think do a better job of providing the sysadmin control over which users appear in the face browser.

I'm marking this bug as a duplicate of that bug.

If you think that additional configuration is needed, then please re-open or file a new bug.
