GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 600044
Evolution closes with no error when using Smartermail as server with IMAP.
Last modified: 2009-12-31 04:30:08 UTC
We changed our mail server to Smartermail about 2 months ago from Exchange. Evolution worked great on Exchange but have had nothing but issues with Evolution since the migration. Using IMAP to connect and the application just dies after you click on a few mail items in the inbox. No error message it just closes. I've tested with zimbra and thunderbird and both of those clients work fine, but I really want to get Evolution up and running again. I've tried on 3 computer each running Ubuntu 9.04 with 2.26 installed and decided to wait for the 9.10 release with 2.28 to see if the issue was resolved and after 2 desktop installs it hasn't.
Can you try running Evolution under gdb and see if you can get a stack trace so we can see where it's dying? Please see http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces for more information on how to do so. Thanks in advance!

May be you have accessibility enabled. In my OpenSUSE box, i have option in control center > Assistive technology We would need gdb traces to know more about crash. Please start evolution in terminal under gdb, when it crashes do 'thread a a bt' and then paste traces here starting from crash point. Please do install debug info packages of evolution and evolution-data-server in case you don't have them already. see http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces/Details#gdb-not-yet-running for details about how to do this
gdb/evo runs for a bit but the screen goes dark and gdb apears to stop. Here is the output (this is the output from my laptop that is still running 2.26). You don't see to have debug info packages installed :-( Please install debugging packages for evolution, evolution-data-server, gtk2 and glib2 (as far as those packages are provided by your distribution). More details can be found here: http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces
gdb is installed that is how I got that output. it appears to be part of the ubuntu package already. gdb evolution then run clicked continue a bunch of times until evolution froze and then gave you the output. then entered thread apply all bt and gave you a bit more of the output before it went back to the command line if there is more magic than that to give you what you need, please explain what needs to be done. i've been given that link a few times and i can only go off of the non user friendly instructions. if not, please close this ticket because i'm about the end of my frustration level for something that shouldn't be this hard and will continue to use what is working for me. thanks for your replies.
Stephen, the process followed by you in comment#4 was perfect. But traces are not useful as you don't have debuginfo packages installed. Now what you need to do is install debug info packages mentioned in comment#5 and provide us traces again. Thanks.
Stephen: Please do not set the GNOME target field. Thanks.
