Make changing the volume unmute (1.40 KB, patch)

Description Tor Klingberg 2009-10-26 14:46:10 UTC
From Ubuntu: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-media/+bug/460390

Pulling "Output volume" in Sound Preferences down to the bottom automatically checks the "Mute" checkbox.
Now pulling the volume back up again (even without releasing the mouse button between) will not uncheck Mute.
Same thing for the "Alert volume" slider and for those under "Applications".
The sound actually stays muted. It is not just a display bug. The volume control that comes up when clicking the little icon in the Gnome panel does not have the same problem.

This is on Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" Netbook Remix.

That's working as expected. This is to avoid surprises when changing the volume.

Given that the mute button is clearly next to the slider, I don't think there's much concern that it would catch people out.

I was quite surprised when there was no sound...

How about the volume slider doesn't affect the mute checkbox at all? Or tie them together completely like the panel applet. Could you at least make it work if I pull the slider down and up again without releasing the mouse button?

I don't think it is a good idea to have two volume slider representing the same thing behaving differently. It is a very neat that the applet slider mutes when at minimum and unmutes when raised up. The dialog slider should work the same way. Using your words: "Given that the mute button is clearly next to the slider, I don't think there's much concern that it would catch people out."

Why would I want to raise the slider with mute still enabled? I don't understand. Could you elaborate more on that?

Also, it causes other regression issues, as in bug #600017.

Thank you in advance for providing more detailed explanation. And for thinking this problem once more through.

Bastien,

the current behaviour is inconsistent:
- with gnome-volume-control, sliding to volume 0 and back enables mute and does not disable it.
- however, when doing the same with the gnome-volume-control-applet, the panel icon changes to mute when sliding to 0, and correctly shows the current volume again when sliding back
- furthermore, note that even when mute is explicitly set to "on" in g-v-c, changing the g-v-c-a slider correctly unmutes the sound

To what "surprises" are you referring to that would justify the current inconsistent behaviour, could you please elaborate on that?

I can see that the described problem is a minor nuisance, but it is still a bug, the behaviour of the g-v-c is illogical, and setting this report to "RESOLVED" is simply wrong.

Correct. A few days ago I wanted to set the volume of an application to very low (5%). 10% was too loud. You would be surprised how hard it can be with current implementation. I put the slider way too much left and involuntarily muted it. Then moved it right, found it muted. Unmuted it. Found it too loud. Moved it left and again muted it unwillingly. ... Really, this feature can be annoying sometimes.

Why would someone want to increase the slider from zero while having the sound still muted anyway? Could anyone picture a possible situation? Thanks.

Make changing the volume unmute

In the volume preferences as in the applet.
