Description Mishka 2009-10-15 10:49:17 UTC
Hi,

I've never had a problem with using GIMP before until i brought a new Olympus digital camera yesterday. When i try to open a photo taken by the new camera in GIMP i get..

"jpeg.exe has stopped working"

"Pango-WARNING (recursed) **: couldn't load font "AvantGarde LT Bold 8.3994140625", expect ugly output. aborting..."

"This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

"gimp-2.2.exe has stopped working"

But GIMP works fine with other photos just not photos taken with the new camera. I don't have a clue what to do and i hope somebody can help me.

GIMP 2.2 is a very old version and certainly not supported in any way any more. Please uninstall it and remove all traces of it and then install the latest GIMP 2.6 (currently 2.6.7) from http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net. Then report back whether it works better (or not).

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I installed the newer version and i was able to open the photos but it then started to crash when i clicked on the text option in GIMP. Advice on another forum informed me to search for and install the 'AvantGarde LT Bold' font that was giving me the error and all seems to be going well so far. So the combination of the new version and the font seems to have sorted out the problem.

Thank you for your help it's much appreciated!.

I still don't understand what having a certain 3rd-party font, or not, has to do with GIMP and loading JPEG files, though. But you talk about the text tool in your latest comment, is that then where this problem actually was?
Comment 4 Mishka 2009-10-15 15:53:41 UTC
I don't understand it either. The problem at first was that i couldn't open the JPEG files at all in to GIMP as it would say "couldn't load font "AvantGarde LT Bold. expect ugly output" then GIMP would crash. The weird thing was that i could open any other JPEG just not the ones from my new camera.

I tried many different things before asking for help and getting the advice to install a newer version of GIMP. After i installed the new version i was able to open the JPEG files from the new camera and everything was fine until i clicked on the text option in GIMP and it crashed everytime i clicked the text tool although everything else worked fine.

So somebody advised me to look for the 'AvantGarde Bold' font on my computer to see if it was corrupted or not. I couldn't find the font on my computer so i downloaded it and installed it. After i did that i was able to use the text tool in GIMP with no problems at all and so far everything is working well.

I have no idea why a font was causing so much trouble or why i couldn't open photos from my new camera but at least it seems sorted now.

So you basically say:

- I could not load JPEG files originating from my camera
- I installed this font and I could use the text tool

I don't see any connection between these two statements... How is loading JPEG files related to using the text tool? You seem to leave out a lot of information.

- Were you then not able to use the text tool before you installed that font? Not at all, not even on a new empty image, or not on some existing xcf file?

- Could you load the JPEG file after you installed the font then?

Sorry if im confusing you. It was a very confusing and frustrating problem thats hard to describe.

-The first problem i had was with trying to open the jpeg files.

I took the photos off my camera and put them on to my computer. I couldn't open the files with gimp, i just got the error messages that i quoted in my first post. i installed a newer version of the gimp and that allowed me to open the files.

-The second problem was with trying to use the text tool

After installing the newer version of gimp it then wouldn't let me use the text tool, gimp just crashed when i clicked on the text tool, so i installed the font that kept popping up in the error message that i had in the first place when trying to open jpeg files. After i did that the text tool worked fine after that. I was not able to use the text tool at all before installing that font. I have no idea why and i have no idea why installing that font solved the problem.

OK. The general rules is one separate bug report for each separate problem. So let's say that this bug is only about not being able to open the certain kind of JPEG files, change the summary, and keep this bug closed. The *warning* messages you got in GIMP 2.2 related to the font in question were not related to the JPEG problem at all. Please open a separate bug about the font issue in GIMP 2.6 where it was not just a warning any more, but an inability to use the text tool.

The Olypmus problem is well-known and has been fixed a while ago in libexif. A simple search with the term "Olympus" would have showed you that.
