Hello,
when in Nautilus i go to: Edit>Preferences>Views and choose V on 'Text beside icons' this option affect only on the file manager Nautilus and not on the Desktop itself. 

i'm using ubuntu 9.04, however i did a test on some other linux distribution and the option still affect only the file manager not the desktop itself.
