GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 588946
Canberra is not in Victoria
Last modified: 2010-02-23 07:06:12 UTC
[ Forwarded from http://bugs.debian.org/523968 ] This was reported against 2.24.3, but I've reproduced it with 2.26.1: " When adding Canberra (Australia) as a location in the Gnome panel clock applet, it is found automatically with timezone "Eastern Time (Victoria)", or Australia/Melbourne. But Canberra is located in the Australian Capital Territory, not in Victoria. The correct timezone would be "Eastern Time (Australian Capital Territory)" or Australia/Canberra. If that timezone is not available, then "Eastern Time (New South Wales)", or Australia/Sydney, would be more appropriate. The Australian Capital Territory is wholly located within the state of New South Wales, and is much closer to Sydney than to Melbourne. The government of the ACT would coordinate matters such as timezone (that is, daylight savings time etc) in line with NSW rather than Victoria. "
It looks like it's a bug that we have separate time zones for Victoria and NSW, and they ought to be merged into just plain "Eastern Time".
This problem has been fixed in the development version by changing the timezone hint to "Australia/ACT". The fix will be available in the next major software release. Thank you for your bug report.
Change of plans: set timezone to Australia/Sydney. The other suggested values weren't represented in /usr/share/zoneinfo/zone.tab and caused other configuration checks to fail.
