GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 588702
Ctrl+T should open a new tab
Last modified: 2014-01-11 10:47:55 UTC
Currently, Ctrl+N opens a new tab in Gedit. This is inconsistent with other GNOME applications' keyboard shortcuts. Epiphany, GNOME-Terminal and Nautilus all have Ctrl+N opening a new window and Ctrl+T opening a new tab. This kind of inconsistency is bad because it places an additional mental burden on users. It requires them to learn multiple sets of shortcuts for different applications. This isn't always easy to do and can be a source of frustration.
Well, it's ctrl+N because that's semantically different from "open new tab", it is "open new document": right now it opens a tab but someday it may be decided that it opens a window etc. That said I admit I end up using ctrl+T myself, so I am not sure... I'd be open to change it if the HIG team reaches a conclusion on it.
Well, semantics is a tricky subject... ;) If you find yourself hitting Ctrl+T for a tab, and I find myself doing the same, the chances are that other people are also doing it. It might be a long time before the HIG has a section on tabs. While we wait for that to come along, we've got a desktop which is inconsistent in the way that users interact with different GNOME applications. I can't see a good reason not to follow other GNOME apps until a firm answer presents itself. Paolo - if you disagree and still think that this requires something from the HIG first, I could mark this bug as depending on bug 72101.
As a user, +1 to having both CTRL+N (new document -> open in a tab) and CTRL+T (open a tab -> make a new document).
Ctrl-N is »New Document«. No need to change it. Please stay consistent.

What's the final concensus on this? So far Ctrl + N still holds good in git master. Just curious!

This problem has been fixed in the development version. The fix will be available in the next major software release. Thank you for your bug report.
