Description Derek White 2009-07-15 03:48:24 UTC
Documentation
Section: Advanced Preferences - 6.2
By default, GNOME Power Manager supports a simple locking scheme. This means that the screen will lock if set to "Lock screen" in gnome-screensaver when the lid is closed, or the system performs a suspend or hibernate action.

There is a complex locking scheme available for power users that allows locking policy to change for the lid, suspend and hibernate actions. To enable this complex mode, you will have to disable the GConf key:

Other information:
Updated the screensaver-related information and changed the wording to be more generalized (and maybe a bit more wordy).

First of all, Ubuntu doesn't do anything at all. gnome-power-manager is upstream software. Ubuntu are just the distributor that takes the upstream package, patches a few policy choices, and stamps on some branding.

Also, I think you've misunderstood the point of these paragraphs -- they describe the difference between the simple and complex locking schemes, not when the screen when lock. The first sentence also contains too many commas and would be difficult to translate.

Also, the second paragraph isn't correct, advanced users can just change policy when to lock, not what actions are performed on blank screen etc.

updated .diff for Derek's suggested changes to C/gnome-power-manager.xml

He must have gotten the text from my Ubuntu bug and not this one.

The complex scheme allows you to customize when the screen will lock; therefore, IT IS describing when the screen will lock (for advanced scheme, at least); however, seeing your point I removed the listing of actions from the first paragraph, which details the normal/simple scheme. As far as the commas go...if you can tell me how to write out a listing without using commas I'd be open to suggestion. Until then, I'm sure other languages have a way to list items in sentences...I may be wrong.

The second paragraph says nothing about what actions are performed when the screen locks, just that the screen can be made to lock when those actions are performed. I have no idea what you are talking about.

Anyways, I have added a new .diff, maybe this will work better.

Can I close this bug?
Comment 7 Derek White 2010-01-17 19:05:21 UTC
I guess...

Doesn't seem like anyone decided to put it in.
Comment 8 Richard Hughes 2010-01-20 14:41:58 UTC
I don't think the new text is any clearer than what was there before, sorry.
