Description Paul 'VeGeek' Lubetsky 2009-06-16 15:02:29 UTC
Please describe the problem:
Gnome Terminal simply freezes with default settings when receiving a lot of data to scrollback.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open terminal
2. Run, for example, 'strace gedit' and wait.

Actual results:
Terminal window freezes.

Expected results:

Does this happen every time?
Only with gtk some engines (Murrine, Aurora, maybe others).

Other information:
Workaround is to enlarge scrollback size.
Comment 1 Paul 'VeGeek' Lubetsky 2009-06-16 17:55:09 UTC
Other workaround is to disable scrollbar.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.
This bug report isn't very useful because it doesn't describe the bug well. If you have time and can still reproduce the bug, please read http://bugzilla.gnome.org/bug-HOWTO.html and add a more useful description to this bug.

I can reproduce it on Ubuntu 10.04 with GNOME 2.30.2. If I fire up a fresh gnome-terminal and run "strace gedit" it seems to hang maybe 50% of the time. The terminal gets into a state where pressing keys (including Control-C and Control-Z) has no effect whatsoever. I can still close the terminal by clicking the "X" button on the title bar.

No, I can't reproduce, and try and try and I can't do it...

now I try with gnome-terminal 2.30.2-Ubuntu

I have gnome-terminal 2.29.6-0ubuntu5 and libvte9 1:0.23.5-0ubuntu1.1.

Is there anything I can do to help diagnose the problem when it happens?
Comment 8 Fabio Durán Verdugo 2010-07-29 10:57:29 UTC
hmmm ok, can you install the debug package for strace?? because I uninstall this package and I managed to reproduce this bug.

If you can confirm this this problem is NOT GNOME.

please feedback, thank

Where from? I can only find:

$ aptitude search strace
p dnstracer - trace DNS queries to the source
i strace - A system call tracer

I'm running a normal Ubuntu 10.04 LTS system.

I'm sure I've seen this before, and no it's not been fixed. I'm even sure it's a dupe of some other bug, but can't find it right now. Anyway, please leave open.

I think some of the analysis in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=688127 might be relevant here. The problem is especially prominent when using the scroll wheel, since every single notify event triggers a bunch of regex matching.
