GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 570164
Character count
Last modified: 2018-05-22 13:19:48 UTC
Hi there. I just made the switch from Pidgin to Empathy, and I would like to say that there is only one thing I miss (and even on Pidgin that is a plugin). Character count. It could be added right next to the message field, so it wouldn't take up much space or make the interface much more cluttered. Why do I think this is a useful feature ? We live in an age of microblogs, and I use an XMPP frontend to post to the 2 microblogging services I use, so character count is a need so I can keep under 140 characters. I totally understand if people think this will just clutter the application and it's not needed, but anyway, I stated my opinion.
This is useful when writing SMS using an SIP account. I think we should add this in some way in the UI, not sure how. Mockups are welcome ;)
Sounds like it's time to get a plugin API for Empathy.
I would just like to say that I would really love to see a character counter. I've been searching around the 'net for a good Linux IM client that would be useful for microblogging too. Having a character count would make empathy perfect for the job.
I would definitely second this request. I think it should be an opt-in feature, so it would not add too much clutter by default. But especially for microblogging this is essential. (And the SMS use case sounds plausible, too.)
