Description Tom 2008-12-10 21:07:49 UTC
To compete with Windows OS's

A configurable mouse-wheel control where clicking the mouse-wheel switches between 3 basic features; Volume control, Zoom and Forward/Reverse. Perhaps more than 3 but they are the only good uses that i can think of for a mouse wheel.

I want the mouse wheel to turn the volume up and down where-ever it is on the screen (except if it's on the time-line or if i'm pressing Ctrl) it seems the obvious and only sensible use of the mouse wheel. A friend thinks exactly the same except its Zoom rather than Volume for him.

At the moment i have to find where the arrow is and move it down to a very tiny area which takes too long when there are explosions after people have been whispering. Also the right click doesn't pause the film but that's another long story ;)

Hey, Totem is great and Linux is magic because of the work people like you do so a big thanks for all that. Good luck and have fun :)

Ok, Xine allows the user to reconfigure which keys do what but Totem is a much better player (imo) and is the standard one new users are given by default. It's odd that users have no choices about settings.

On the other hand it looks good and i'm told the Ati issues have been fixed with the latest driver so there isnt a horrendous flicker when an innocent & wary noob plays a movie :)

Oh, i'm disappointed to see the "duplicate bug report" is about a completely different issue. The issue there is about forward&rewind whereas this is about Volume Control.

I think this would be a blocker for me if i wasn't so committed to Ubuntu. Multimedia apps in Linux generally seem extremely sub-standard and it's a pity to see "Wont fix" on some very basic issues. Seems a bit petulant.

My mistake, too quick on the buttons there.
Comment 6 Tom 2009-02-17 19:44:39 UTC
Ooops, now i'm embarrassed and have lots of egg on my face lol

Having the mouse wheel do anything other than control volume is really annoying tho. I don't like having to pull up the grey taskbar in order to change the volume as it's very distracting and is a lot brighter than the darkness of many movies.

Anyway, thanks for re-assessing this

Tom :)

Now i've been using Ubuntu for a while i've found that this isn't a trivial issue and such a thing might require substantial re-writing of large parts of the code! I'm shocked no-one pointed that out before.

Totem is excellent, perhaps not exactly as i would like but it does work and it's great, i've enjoyed a lot of movies on it now and thoroughly enjoy using it :)))
Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

> To compete with Windows OS's

We do NOT WANT THIS. STOP TRYING TO BE LIKE WINDOWS. BE LIKE VLC INSTEAD.
