GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 562461
"Show compact contact list" has no obvious opposite
Last modified: 2009-07-10 12:10:20 UTC
Empathy 2.24.1, Ubuntu 8.10 In the Preferences "General" tab, the "Appearance" section has a checkbox labelled "Show compact contact list". Guideline: Use a checkbox only if the label for the checked state makes obvious the meaning of the unchecked state. It's not obvious what it means for "Show compact contact list" to be unchecked. Does it mean not showing the contact list at all? Showing the contact list in a non-compact way? Or showing some other list instead of the contact list? One way of solving this would be to present this option as a pair of radio buttons: Show contact list: (*) Normal size ( ) Compact Another way of solving it would be being more specific about what the option does: [/] Include buddy icons and statuses in the contact list
The first suggestion is still awkward, I think. Something like this would make more sense imho: Contact list appearance: [Normal Size _] // 2-item combo box Anyway, the second suggestion makes more sense, since it describes what actually happens.
