GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 558412
"document viewer" is actually "evince", thus it should be named that way
Last modified: 2008-10-29 18:17:41 UTC
I will probably ridiculed forever for this, but here it goes: Recently I wanted to file a bug report with Ubuntu about "document viewer" (whatever that is, I'm new to Gnome, have been using KDE, but KDE 4.x is just insane, and that's mildly put). But then I needed to specify a package name. Naturally, I looked for "document viewer", since that's how the window was named. Didn't find anything. After some digging I found that "Document viewer" was actually "evince". The logo also shows a stylized "e", so that's at least some hint. But why not actually name the program at least **a little bit** like the binary, e.g. "evince document viewer" or "document viewer (evince)" Instead, it says in HELP/About: Document Viewer 2.24.1 document viewer Using poppler 0.8.7 (cairo) Document viewer is a document viewer? Come on... I'd opt either for removing the 2nd line "document viewer" OR renaming the whole thing evince 2.24.1 a document viewer Using poppler 0.8.7 (cairo) The second line seems to be a description of what the program can be used for. document viewer man page? Nah: $ man document-viewer No manual entry for document-viewer $ man documentviewer No manual entry for documentviewer apt-cache, anybody? Nah: $ apt-cache search gnome document viewer epdfview - Lightweight pdf viewer based on poppler libs gnome-desktop-environment - The GNOME Desktop Environment Other information:

Didn't find anything. Well, on ubuntu all programmes have the "Report a bug" item right there in the Help menu, just above About. Since you found About, it you ought have noticed that... :) The naming argument is going on in bug 312399. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 312399 ***
