It would be very great to add a flexible spacer in the panel objects (right click to panel -> Add to Panel). I mean by "flexible spacer" the possibility to add a spacer that takes all available space and moves icons to one side or the other of the panel. XFCE's panel has this useful option. Firefox's and Thunderbird's toolbars have it too.

I most definitely subscribe to this bug as it's been nagging me for more than 2 or 3 years now. Every now and them I try a game or application which crashes and leaves my resolution to a different value than the original. If it is a lower resolution the launchers will most definitely be messed up being thrown towards the right side of the screen. Having around 15 launchers this means that it's a pain to move all of them back. An applet would fix all these problems, but I haven't been able to find one.

Subscribing since this bug has been annoying me a long time.  It usually happens during initial setup of a new machine during all the monitor resizes in the monitor configuration step.  I also currently have Ubuntu setup inside a VMWare virtual machine which basically resizes the monitor to full screen mode every time I log in and the VMWare Tools application starts.  This leaves the applets that should be on the right sitting in the middle of my panels with every login.  Unlocking and moving them all every login is a serious pain.

Oh, that's fixed in GNOME 3. You can simply right-align applets now.
