GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 557081
Table columns should remember (relative) widths
Last modified: 2020-12-04 18:21:03 UTC
In any application using tables (Nautilus, Banshee, etc.), I have to resize the table columns every time I open the application. In some (most?) frameworks this is left for the developer (thinking JFace), but since it is fundamental to the user experience, remembering table column widths should be a component of the HIG. Nautilus is especially annoying--with USB plug/unplug I end up with a lot of windows, all of which have the wrong width columns. I would argue this should be a component of the table framework itself (so developers don't have to reimplement the same code), but first things first. Other information:
I don't think there's any argument that remembering the column width is a good idea, so I'm not sure how helpful specific design guidelines on this are. Instead, I would pursue getting this fixed in the relevant applications, Nautilus being the most obvious one. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 164398 ***
