Sometimes when I close a tab, gnome-terminal crashes and brings down every running terminal. I haven't been able to reproduce this yet, but here's the error in .xsession-errors:

ERROR:terminal-tabs-menu.c:133:free_tab_id: assertion failed: (id >= 0 && id < tabs_id_array->len * 8)

This problem has been fixed in the development version. The fix will be available in the next major software release. Thank you for your bug report.

this is apparently also triggered when closing the 11th (or more) terminal instance: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+bug/286823

This is fixed in 2.24.1. Ubuntu added a partial/broken patch to its g-t package.

the current Intrepid package is 2.24.1-0ubuntu1, and it's fixed in there.
