GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 555173
save deletes file
Last modified: 2018-06-29 22:11:01 UTC
Please describe the problem: Occasionally, when I sit down to do some accounting with GnuCash, I discover that my saved GnuCash files have gone missing. When this happens, I am always able to recover them from the backup files that GnuCash automatically creates (thank goodness!). However, this has happened enough now that I'm starting to get a bit paranoid. Now, whenever I use GnuCash, I always start with a shell to verify (using "ls") that my file is there. I change into the file's folder and run GnuCash using the command "gnucash filename.xac &". Then I use the application for a while, save the book, and then use the shell to make sure my file's still there. Sometimes, it's not! All I have to do to resolve the problem is save again, but this is really not the experience you want your users to have! I've been using GnuCash since 2001 and it is only recently that I have begun to observe this behavior. This is really scary! Steps to reproduce: Make a change and save; repeat. Eventually, it will happen. It's very rare, but it does happen. There's some weak evidence that suggests it's more likely to happen when you confirm a save while exiting the application. Actual results: Usually, everything behaves as it should. Rarely, the data doesn't get saved and the original file disappears. Expected results: The original file should be renamed as a backup file, and the revised book data should be written out to the disk with the same name as the original file before it was renamed. Does this happen every time? No, it's infrequent, but very serious. Other information: I'm running Fedora 8 on LVM file system. Who knows? LVM could be a factor.
