When identifying the user, Empathy reports the result of the communication with NickServ in a similar fashion as normal communication.  For some people that fire up multiple IRC accounts on laptops that move around alot, there is an awful lot of clearing of these messages.  If they are monitoring idle channels to provide help, the overhead of the message clearing can be a bit much.

My thinking is that IRC should operate like other protocols where logging in with a password is a silent operation unless there is a failure.

After thinking about this a bit, I think the path of least resistance would be to allow the user to create a contact name "NickServ" and set them to be ignored. I'm not sure if this functionality is available yet since the Ubuntu RC Contact list is buggy.

Ideally, Telepathy should provide the capability to suppress IRC protocol specific messages.  The noob user is really only interested in the chat, not the underlying op messages, etc.  

My suggestion was a quick and dirty workaround to get it so that it could be used and tested by individuals like me.  If it had a similar level of functionality to pidgin for IRC, then I could run it regularly and provide feedback.

KSirc displayed messages from NickServ and friends as inline channel messages.  That meant that you didn't miss anything but that you didn't get flooded with private messages.

It has been said that one way to fix this would be to ignore "notices" from nickserv (nickserv will still reply to you using normal "messages" if you talk to it).

The nickserv notices, at least on freenode, are pretty much useless.
