GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 546370
GDM should have option to lock screen on autologin
Last modified: 2009-03-24 21:02:16 UTC
Autologin feature of GDM is very usefull for workstations with only one user. But I do not want to leave my workstation available to all my co-workers just after it boots. KDM has a feature of automatically locking the screen with screensaver just after autologin. This way after power up, the default user is logged in, all the background applications start, and user is asked for a password to access the screen. Other information:
Wouldn't it be easy enough to just set up xscreensaver so it always starts up when you log in via autostart if you are using the latest version of gnome-session, or via /usr/share/gnome/default.session otherwise?
1. GNOME uses gnome-screensaver, not xscreensaver. 2. It would be possible, but definately not "easier".
Issue #1 is one of the reasons I think my above suggestion is "easier" than writing the code to make it even more easy. If you wanted GDM to just manage this, then it would require some configuration options added. I'm also not sure that this sort of feature would be a commonly used one. Most users don't use autostart, let alone such wizbang configurations. That said, if you wanted to write a patch to make GDM more wizbangy, feel free to attach it. Or if you just wanted to suggest that the documentation be updated to explain how a user can configure this, then please suggest the instructions once you get it working. At any rate, this isn't a bug. It is, perhaps, an enhancement request. Could you please update the bug report to mark it as an enhancement in the "Severity" field, especially if you don't plan to provide a patch.
I did select "Usability - This is a suggestion for how the application could be made easier to use." option on the "New bug" page. Thus I expected the bug to be created as a feature request. :-)
GDM is not used only with Gnome, but e.g. with Xfce. Gnome-screensaver and xscreensaver are daemons, one of which may be autostarted by a Xfce init scripts or autostarted applications. Even for Gnome, would starting such a daemon already in GDM work?
