the bug has been opened on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/file-roller/+bug/251618 "Binary package hint: file-roller i use intrepid with up to date packages file-roller version is 2.23.4 if you need further informations, i will try to send them i simply tried to make a tar.bz2 archive for my important directory (containing diploms, salary and so on)

looks like a temporary directory couldn't be created for some reason.
the get_dest_free_space() function was bogus, fixed now.
