GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 543849
Unmount optical media without ejecting
Last modified: 2009-03-19 18:24:04 UTC
To unmount removable media from command line user should type several symbols of command, but to do it from nautilus two clicks is enougth. I often experience inconvenience it impossible, and think there are peoples who experience it too. Therefore offer to add such functionality.
Thanks for the bug report! Can you give some more details about exactly what you are requesting? Do you want the functionality of the mount command to be modified, or is your request specific to the Nautilus graphical interface? If the latter, how would you like the interface to change?
Only additional item "unmount" in context menu on desktop icons of optical drives and its in side panel in Nautilus.
OK, so you want an unmount option for optical media, where selecting the option unmounts the drive but does not eject it. Thanks for the additional information, I've reopened the bug. I've also changed the component to general, since this request potentially effects a number of different components. Andrey: it might help the developers if you could provide a bit of information about why you want this feature. Could you describe some situations in which you find it useful/necessary?
I whant this feature to increase summary speed of work. Common situation is multitask and so multiwindow work on desktop. While walk to window with an pty, where will be work with unmounted optical media device (writing/erasing CD/DVD, dump it image with dd), you can quick unmount it start to work instead type pestered command "umount /dev/hdd" before. But I become to think that it feature is not big necessary. You will be right if give preference to other, seriouse things (bugs and feature requests). Sorry for false alarm. You was so courteous, that I wonder "it feature really interests developers?" and give you additional info.
Andrey: I agree that this might not be something that most users will want. I'll leave the bug open, but I'm changing the priority to low. One thing that might be of interest is Nautilus scripts [1]. This is a way to add bits of additional functionality to the Nautilus context menu. If the script you want isn't available, I'm sure you could request it. [1] http://g-scripts.sourceforge.net/
