GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 541717
'Lock Screen' applet should give option to 'Power Down Screen' - useful for laptops
Last modified: 2020-11-07 12:14:31 UTC
I like to do stuff in my room while my laptop plays music. I don't need the backlit screen to be on - which lessens it's lifespan while draining my battery. I can't close the laptop lid, because that would cover up the internal speakers, so instead I'd like an option in the lock screen applet to power down the screen (ie. turn the backlighting off entirely). I can accomplish this currently with any of the following commands: xset s activate xset dpms force off or sleep 1; gnome-screensaver-command --lock; sleep 10; xset s activate but having it built-in to the applet would be far more elegant and available for new users. I am not a technician, but I am guessing repeated turning the bulbs on and off in a strobelight fashion could be damaging to them, which is why using 'sleep' to pause execution may be recommended. PS I previously filed this request on http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/10585/ but the folks at irc.gnome.org/gnome-hackers said to post it here too.
The applet you are talking about has nothing to do with Deskbar. It's part of gnome-panel. Reassigning.

Still happening in Ubuntu 12.10 on my Macbook Pro. The keyboard backlight and the Apple logo also stay on, until my screen saver is started.
bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all old feature requests in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years. If you still use gnome-panel and if you are still requesting this feature in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-panel/-/issues/ Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be implemented.
