"Using gedit, whenever the ruby globals $' and $` are used, the text that follows is highlighted as a string until the appropriate string delimiter is encountered again. Screenshot attached.

A workaround is to use comments to correct the highlighting;
e.g.
$' #'
$` #` 
"
