Please don't render a shadow for the border. With the current behavior you just recognize the large shadow area; not really the border window causing the shadow to appear.

Sorry, I don't understand the problem with the alt-tab window having a border.

It darkens whatever window currently is on top. Maybe instead of the border window, we could display all windows with 50% opacity and only the to-be-focused one with 100%.
