GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 517969
Cancel and Save buttons jump to right right after 1 second
Last modified: 2021-05-25 12:37:37 UTC
The width of the "Save Screenshot" dialog changes after the [Cancel] and [Save] buttons were shown initially. Therefore, the Cancel and Save buttons jump to the right after the window resizing. This is very annoying on a slow computer. What happens? Initially, the dialog is shown with an empty drop-down for "Save in folder:". However, after about 1 second, when that information becomes available (no idea what it exactly does), the drop-down gets updated and the window becomes wider (on my system 38 pixels). An unfortunate side-effect of this resizing is that the right side of the [Cancel] button is now where the left side of the [Save] button was. If you're too fast on a slow computer, there's a reasonable chance that you click the [Cancel] button by accident because you didn't move the mouse pointer accordingly after the buttons "jumped" a bit to the right. I can't remember how many times I have erroneously discarded a screenshot that I actually wanted to save. I will attach 2 screenshots of this behaviour. ASCII art versions: Initially: +------------------------------------------------+ | Save Screenshot | +------------------------------------------------+ | +-----------+ Name: [Screenshot.png] | | | | Save in folder: [ +] | | | | | | | | | | +-----------+ | | | | +------+ +------+ +------+ | | | Help | |Cancel| | Save | | | +------+ +------+ +------+ | +------------------------------------------------+ Eventually: +----------------------------------------------------+ | Save Screenshot | +----------------------------------------------------+ | +-----------+ Name: [Screenshot.png ] | | | | Save in folder: [evert +] | | | | | | | | | | +-----------+ | | | | +------+ +------+ +------+ | | | Help | |Cancel| | Save | | | +------+ +------+ +------+ | +----------------------------------------------------+ I think this could be fixed by either: * Not showing the "Save Screenshot" dialog until the final window dimensions are known. * Not showing the [Cancel] and [Save] buttons until the final window dimensions are known. Version details: gnome-utils 2.18.1 Other information: A UI bug such as this is probably not noticeable on a fast computer as I imagine many developers have. However, on this Pentium 4 1.6 GHz from 2001, I can assure you that it is very annoying unfortunately as for me this a "data loss" bug. A while ago, I filed a similar problem (bug 484444), which I guess is also not noticeable on a fast computer. I think it would be interesting if GTK+ could be run in "slow-motion" for debugging purposes. E.g. with a configurable delay after certain (re)draw events. That would allow a developer or a user to visually spot such superfluous (re)draw operations. Resulting optimizations ultimately also benefit GTK+ on faster machines.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new enhancement request ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-screenshot/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
