GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 516770
Locations need some usability love
Last modified: 2020-11-06 20:24:49 UTC
First let me say that I love this new feature, but IMHO it's not perfect yet. There are some things that can or should be done, to make it better: 1. Analog clocks with location time and digital clocks with local time and timezone offset are simply confusing. Analog clocks are unreadable and I don't know if it's AM or PM on some Pacific island. I've attached a mockup showing how it could look like. 2. The order of locations is different in the panel and in clock preferences (screenshot attached). 3. Windows for adding new location and editing existing don't have titles. 4. Choosing a timezone is painful. It would be nice to see a treeview widget similar to the one for selecting location. 5. Column headers in the location list (in the preferences window) would be nice. One might not understand why "New York" is followed by "America/New_York". Oh, and why is there an underscore if the timezone name on the list has a space? 6. A home icon is shown on every location in the same timezone as the computer's one, but I do not live in several cities. Other information:

Ad 1: If fixed the display of time for locations a while ago (it is now the local time, the offset is purely meant as extra information).
I love the clock applet with it's map feature. I'm often on the phone with friends who live in other continents and it's much more convenient let the computer do the calculation than calculating which time it is in the other place myself. I have some suggestions to develope it further: 1. It would of great help if I could also add UTC and other more technical time zones to my list. That's very useful for being able to participate in online events. They should also appear in the select list for locations. 2. Also I'd suggest that a user should be able to enter locations in an expert mode where she or he can determine the name of the entry, the time zone (MESZ+1 etc.), longitude an latitude, whether or not to show it on a map, whether or not to show informations about the local weather. 3. Additional to this I would love to be able to add countdown time marks, let's say for a broadcast event at 7pm tonight in the GMT+3 zone. The clock would then show me in the list another location with information about the local time, how much time is left until the event starts and automatically remove the event when it's over. Thanks for your time reading this! I hope you like my ideas!
