Description João Matos 2008-02-15 15:34:45 UTC
I've seen some other requests about updating the icons, so while we're at it let's update the Slash screen too.

Alternatively, we should kill the splash screen if it's possible, and just load the plugins in the background after the UI is shown.
Comment 1 Andreas Nilsson 2008-02-15 15:41:54 UTC
If the second one is doable, then yes please!
If not (and only then), I can hopefully fix you something.
Comment 2 Michael Monreal 2008-02-15 15:46:01 UTC
+1 for finally getting rid of the splash. The splash makes GNOME feel like some GUI addon... while it technically is, it would be nicer to just have it feel like a natural and integrated part of the OS.
Comment 3 Michael Monreal 2008-02-15 15:47:49 UTC
Heh... guess I should stay in bed today... or at least read what component the bug is about :D

Anyway, I don't think Anjuta really needs the splash...
Comment 4 Rodney Dawes 2008-02-15 15:54:34 UTC
I vote for killing the splash screen, and loading plug-ins in an idle handler. :)
Comment 5 Johannes Schmid 2008-02-15 16:23:10 UTC
Of course killing the splash screen would be the best solution. Anyway, there is some misunderstanding what is done during the splash screen:

Without having plugins loaded anjuta just has about three menu items:
- File->Quit
- Edit->Preferences
- Help->*

So, it's not very useful to show the UI in that moment as all other menu and ui items are created by the plugins. That's the reason why we do not load plugins in an idle handler.

Currently there are some more things done during splash we could be eliminated (in the future, after GNOME 2.22):
- Loading the project
- Loading the symbols of the project (should disappear once we have them in a database mostly
- Loading all files of the session (will go into background, actually just an issue of the splash screen implementation).

Not sure if we can get rid of the splash screen completely.
Comment 6 Naba Kumar 2008-02-16 10:07:28 UTC
You can run anjuta with -s option to suppress splash screen. Clicking on it also hides it. The splash screen load progress can not be avoided and it won't mean any faster anjuta startup.

For normal users, choices are clear. Either we show nothing and let user wait in frustration and confusion (e.g. starting Anjuta twice assuming the first one failed) Or show something to sooth his painful wait (progressbar was invented for that).

Only meaningful way to consider removing splash screen is if Anjuta can start like gedit or terminal, which is clearly not the case with an IDE loading full load of 'integrated' tools. While the loading time can certainly be optimized, like Johannes pointed out, that's completely different matter and should be reported as separated bug.

I am marking this bug as invalid on the ground that 'splash screens are not bugs, but a means to handle a technical and psychological situation' :).

Oh, and it's also another matter if the splash can be improved to reduce strain on eyes. Better graphics are always welcome, of course.
Comment 7 Andreas Nilsson 2008-02-16 13:02:25 UTC
Naba: The bug was actually about updating the splash screen, killing it was only a option if it was possible.
Comment 8 João Matos 2008-02-16 14:02:29 UTC
Thanks for your insight, Naba and Johannes, but let's leave this one open so someone does a new slash screen. :)

Current draft

Well here is the latest version. What I was thinking is that the progress bar could be the underline for the text "Anjuta" and below the text and underline/progress bar you could have a percentage complete centered. the progress bar would be black of course and would have to match the text. The percentage complete number and percentage sign would also be black.

Thanks John, but to be truth, I find it boring.

Can we have a sophisticated splash screen? Something which is not 'start-gimp-write-text-save' kinds. I mean see the following splash screens:

http://br.geocities.com/daniel_dandrada/abiword_splash_2_4.png
http://www.communitymx.com/content/source/7302C/splash.gif
http://www.udel.edu/CIS/106/iaydin/07F/labs/lab01_files/matlab_002.png
http://www.luckyicon.com/pictures/infortech-docvcs/splash-screen.png

http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~willb/cs302/summer-2006/project0/tutorial/images/SplashScreen.png

I am not saying they are the best, nor to copy them (found them with a quick google), but there needs to be some elegance in the image. It can all be done within limits of graphics guidelines GNOME has. It's after all the first impression for us.

Hmm, not that bad! Some suggestions:

* I don't like the font of "Anjuta". Maybe something less narrow would be better
* Could you move the "Anjuta" up a bit, maybe even to the top? We need some space for the progress bar
* We are a GNOME application - the GNOME logo should be sharp and clear!

Thanks!

I agree with the above points.
I've some little changes:
* the curve is fine but should maybe be more accentuated.
* The word "Development" should not be so near the curve
* the green background of Anjuta writing should be a beetter color. See for instance http://colorschemedesigner.com/ on how to find a triad or complementary color.

This problem has been fixed in the development version. The fix will be available in the next major software release. Thank you for your bug report.
