gnome-session-daemon will not start - DBUS error

Please describe the problem: Unable to start gnome-settings-daemon. Steps to reproduce: 1. run gnome-settings-daemon in terminal 2. 3. Actual results: Running gnome-settings-daemon in terminal gives: [QUOTE]ian@COOLERMASTER:~$ gnome-settings-daemon ** ERROR **: You can only run one xsettings manager at a time; exiting aborting... Aborted (core dumped) ian@COOLERMASTER:~$[/QUOTE] Enabling root user and then logging in with su and running gnome-settings-daemon gives: [QUOTE]root@COOLERMASTER:/home/ian# gnome-settings-daemon ** (gnome-settings-daemon:6645): WARNING **: Unable to connect to dbus: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. ** ERROR **: You can only run one xsettings manager at a time; exiting aborting... Aborted (core dumped) root@COOLERMASTER:/home/ian#[/QUOTE] Expected results: gnome-settings-daemon would start, without an error message Does this happen every time? Yes Other information: Currently using GNOME 2.20 on Ubuntu Gutsy 2.20. Linux COOLERMASTER 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Tue Dec 18 08:02:57 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux There appear to be many other people experiencing similar problems. PS - this bug is possibly identical to bug 395488, however that bug had been marked as "obsolete" and no action taken so I've posted this as a new bug.
