Description oliver 2008-01-03 00:10:44 UTC
SMTP '550 relay not permitted' is presented to the user in a dialog with the text:

RCPT TO <recipient@example.org> failed: Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable

Suggest presenting a better description of the problem to the user, perhaps suggesting they check their SMTP settings (as was the fix in my case).

Evolution just displays the error message that it receives from the server. The error message itself is NOT generated or altered by Evolution.

Closing as NOTGNOME.
Comment 2 oliver 2012-02-17 20:11:01 UTC
That's the point - it *doesn't* display the error message from the server.

At least, it didn't in 2008...
Comment 3 André Klapper 2012-02-17 20:38:53 UTC
So how do you know what should have been the server message? Did another mail application provide another error message for the same settings?
Comment 4 oliver 2012-02-17 21:36:53 UTC
How do I know the SMTP error was what is above? Packet sniffer most likely.
Comment 5 André Klapper 2012-02-18 09:21:37 UTC
550 can have several reasons (e.g. the both mentioned in this report). Just a "Error 550" in a package sniffer won't really help you clarify. Anyway...
